Lovely interior scene of two young ladies spinning lace with their mother. Intimate scene with lots of details in a bourgeois interior. Painted on a solid mahogany panel. Shows Western European tradition. Signed and dated 1850.

Size: H 55 x W 70 cm – H 85cm x W 100 cm

Belgian School of the mid-19th century.

Lit: This family must have been happy clients of the artist, as he painted another scene with the same three women, “The piano recital”. 

Jean-Baptiste de Landtsheer is a neo-classical painter of interior, historical, religious and genre scenes. He was also a portraitist. Son of the painter Jean de Landtsheer (1750-1828), he studied at the Brussels Academy (1814 with F-J. Navez) then gets a scholarship to go to Paris (1825-26) and Rome (1826-28). He will work in the workshop of A-J Cros in Paris during a year. Professor at the Brussel’s academy (1828-63). Works in the museums of Brussels and Kortrijk.
